LET GIVE YOU SONE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IN WHICH TO GET SOME CLEARITY! March of 1968 Ft. Washington. Now and then!! We did PT in our fatigues and boots. Trainees do NOT do that now! There wearing sneakers and shorts. We were NOT allowed to leave the the company area at anytime during Basic! Don't know where you got your information? Yes, I know first hand in 1968 the DI's could be and were physical. They verbally cursed, degraded you and or your family members. Being able to leave on weekend pass and or anywhere on post was unheard of. There were NO CELL PHONES back then so you were limited as to when you could call. Back then they imposed very strict discipline verbal or physical in order to instill in the Trainee the importance of what it would take to engage in combat and to survive. They prepared us to engage in guerrilla warfare tactics and that is why they were aggressive in Basic Training in which to prepare us. There were no TIME out cards, our DI's were to be feared but respected. Your DI's today are in fact soft. Conclusion: I served 22 years. During my career I served as DI in early 80's I witnessed the change first hand. Exampke: 1968 we were at the range. One Trainee continued to fail to comprehend commands given. DI ordered Trainee to low crawl with rifle across hands and across rocks , the DI took the barrel of another rifle and put between his cheeks and pushed him while low crawling till he could no longer hold his head up and his face became bloodied . That would be unheard of today! The Army has lost its integrity by allowing trainees to have tattoos, allow them to put hands in pockets, they don't respect senior NCO's...Army has lowered There standards just fif recruiting purposes and that's where they lost There integrity. I hope you and all the young millennial trainees understand how it actually and how it is!!!! Out...

I always tell people to get a degree or certifications on the civilian side before getting out.

We had a guy in my division during Boot Camp in the Navy, he couldn’t do 1 single push up. So whenever we did ITE, we always got reset to 1 unless we waited for him to finish

Former recruiter here. The people that work at MEPS know we tell applicants to keep their mouths shut. The personnel at MEPS could care less if you join or not. My advice is if it’s not documented then it never happened.

2 tours at Fort Sill back in the 80’s. Really enjoyed them. Lawton, on the other hand,,,, was definitely a GI town. The airport would CLOSE ( lock up and shut down the lights ), and kick people out. The mall was small. But I had a great grandmother who lived there so I could go there for the weekend. My wingman and I spent a lot of time running to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls Texas…😉

I got out during AIT. I couldn't believe the number of people that wanted out. I told 2 people I was getting out then I literally had 100s coming at me asking me how to get out.

Thanks for sharing My son has trained for about a year after he graduated from high school and then he enlisted , he has worked very hard to be in the best shape he can be and I know that infantry is what he wanted to complete and airborne he is now at camp Moore , he scored very high and out of 50 young men 7 made it through in his group He was amazed at how many didn’t, I am a proud father and support him and all young recruits making the decision to enlist and as you said you have a responsibility to do your job the best that you can God speed young Man!

Amazing! Army AIT in the 70's was civilial clothes first day and we had Beer vending machines in the barracks. You could go anywhere as long as you were back for class.

I think they need to lighten up a little on the medical stuff. No one is perfect. Back in the day people joined with undiagnosed issues.

So the thing with not getting option 4 or 40 on contract is it all depends on ur mos if you can go to it. For example as 68W i didnt get it but there were recruiters at basic and at AIT that asked who wants to do airborne or Rasp. And since i got 68W thats one of the mos they look for. So it is a simple volunteer for it and pass it. If ur mos is something other than a combat role then its alot harder since they wont necessarily need a truck driver or a IT guy. They do need cooks tho lmao

Short answer, yes. Will you live the high life? No*. (*Officers maybe). Many folks will tell you that after 20 you are working for half pay. I suppose it'd be working for 60% pay now with the BRS. But that extra % for every year beyond 20 makes a huge difference.

What freedoms? Ft Leonard Wood Summer of '77, We where allowed off post 1 overnight only if family came down for graduation the next day. I got to leave post 1 Sunday only because we went to church. Other than those 2 days, I did not leave post till I graduated from AIT.
